A gentle buzz on my phone reminded me to book my flu jab, and it got me thinking. Every year, like many others, I get that reminder — and while vaccines are important for protection, true wellness also comes from how we prepare our bodies for the colder months.

Winter is the season when our immune system is tested. According to Ayurveda, this is when Kapha dosha tends to increase, leading to mucus, congestion, and sluggishness in the body. At the same time, Vata dosha rises because of cold, dry air — causing dry skin, stiff joints, and restless energy.

But here’s the good news: Ayurveda also tells us that digestive fire (Agni) is strongest in winter. This means it’s the perfect time to nourish, strengthen, and fortify your system.

Here are five simple, timeless steps I’ve adopted, inspired by an old Indian Vaidya (Ayurvedic practitioner and writer).

🌿 1. Eat Warm, Nourishing Foods

Swap salads and cold foods for soups, stews, and spiced one-pot meals like kitchari. Use warming spices such as turmeric, ginger, cumin, and cinnamon to stoke digestion and keep your body balanced.

🌿 2. Prioritise Daily Oil Massage (Abhyanga)

Dry skin and cracking joints are a common sign of aggravated Vata. Massaging your body with warm sesame or almond oil before a shower helps to lubricate the joints, soften skin, and calm the nervous system.

🌿 3. Stay Active with Gentle Movement

Cold weather makes us want to stay curled up indoors, but gentle exercise is essential to keep Kapha in check. Try yoga, brisk walks, or pranayama (breathwork) to keep energy moving and lungs clear.

🌿 4. Strengthen Immunity with Rituals

This is the time to boost your system with small but powerful rituals:

  • Sip warm herbal teas (ginger, tulsi, cinnamon)

  • Practice daily meditation or grounding breathwork

  • Prioritise consistent sleep and rest

🌿 5. Embrace the Darkness as Reflection Time

With longer nights, winter naturally invites stillness. Instead of resisting, lean into the quiet. Use journaling, reflection, or creative practices to reconnect with yourself. Ayurveda teaches us that inner alignment is just as important as outer care.

Preparing your body for winter doesn’t have to be complicated. With these simple, Ayurvedic-inspired steps, you can support your immunity, nourish your skin, and maintain energy — while also finding beauty in the slower rhythm of the season.
