When Pain Was My First Sign of Perimenopause (Not Hot Flashes) I was waiting for hot flashes to announce menopause. They never came. Instead, my body whispered… then screamed — through pain

About 11–12 years ago, I started experiencing severe neck and shoulder pain. It wasn’t just discomfort — it was debilitating. It disrupted my sleep, my energy, and my ability to feel at ease in my own body.

At the time, menopause felt like a distant chapter.

Perimenopause? I didn’t even know it existed.

Like many women, I believed menopause would arrive with one clear, unmistakable sign: hot flashes. I was waiting for them — almost as a signal that this new phase had begun.

But they never came.

What came instead was confusing, relentless pain.

  • Persistent neck and shoulder pain

  • A strange, heavy chest discomfort

  • Crunching and popping sounds in my shoulder

  • Sleepless nights, unable to turn without pain

I remember lying flat on my back, afraid to move because even the smallest shift caused sharp discomfort. Pain relief offered only temporary relief. Visits to a chiropractor helped — but only for a while.

I went down multiple paths trying to understand what was wrong.

Was it gallbladder stones?

Was it something wrong with my heart?

The uncertainty was exhausting.

Looking back now, I realise — this was my introduction to perimenopause.

The Reality of Perimenopause Symptoms

Perimenopause doesn’t always arrive the way we expect.

For many women, it’s not just about hot flashes. It can show up as:

  • Joint and muscle pain

  • Sleep disturbances

  • Anxiety or brain fog

  • Hormonal imbalances that affect the entire body

My experience felt like a “midlife crisis” — but not in the way it’s often portrayed.

It wasn’t emotional chaos.

It was physical disconnection.

My body felt completely out of sync with my mind.

What I Learned (The Hard Way)

It took time — and a lot of listening — to understand what my body needed.

Here’s what became clear:

1. You Have to Rethink Everything

What worked in your 20s and 30s may not work anymore.

Your body is changing — and it needs a different kind of support.

2. Nutrition Becomes Intentional

Reading supplement labels matters.

You may need to add, adjust, or remove things based on how your body responds — not trends.

3. Sleep Is Foundational

Sleep isn’t just rest — it becomes a healing tool.

And during perimenopause, it often needs to be supported holistically.

4. You Need to “Up Your Game”

Even if you’ve always eaten well and exercised, this phase asks more of you.

More awareness.

More intention.

More care.

“Listening to my body differently’’

Perimenopause taught me something I wasn’t prepared for:

Your body doesn’t always follow the narrative you’ve been told.

Sometimes, it speaks in ways that are unexpected — even uncomfortable.

But if you listen closely, it’s not working against you.

It’s asking you to evolve.

And maybe, just maybe — to finally put yourself at the centre of your own care.
